My journey to cosmetology began before I can even remember. My grandmother was a beautician, but she passed away before I had a chance to really get to know her. I have no physical memories of my grandmother, only pictures and stories. I do remember having a passion for doing hair from a very young age. My mom would see me cutting and styling my Barbie’s hair and tell me I inherited the skill from my grandma. I know, all girls cut their dolls hair, right? Except I didn’t just cut off their hair; I layered their hair. I gave them cute little textured “bob” cuts. My dolls didn’t just go under the scissors – they entered Melissa’s Salon! When I was 11 years old I began working with actual people. My first clients were my dad and sisters and my best friend. I would cut and color, give home perms, make my own foils with kitchen foil to do color, and I was the girl at camp doing everyone’s hair for the banquet and the one my friends called to do their hair for prom. My passion and love for doing hair and my need to somehow know my grandmother is what drove me to explore cosmetology. I also believe that God instills in all of us certain talents and desires that will help guide us to what He has planned for us. I believe with all my heart that God put this desire in me and I am committed to always put God first in my career.
When I finally made it to beauty school I was more excited than ever! My biggest fear when entering school was “what if I’m not good enough? What if I get there and realize that I really can’t do hair?” My training in just the first couple months showed me that I can do this. I’ve always learned best by doing; show me something once and then let me try it. That’s why the practical part of school was so important to me. I loved everything about my training, but I especially loved just getting in there and doing it!
I have high aspirations for my cosmetology career. I have attended educational events and hair shows, worked behind the chair in both a mid-level commission salon, and now in a higher-end booth rent salon. I am constantly looking for opportunities to expand my range of knowledge and I soak in everything I can from the stylists around me who have been in the industry for years. I had three goals set for after I graduated beauty school. First, I was going to spend the first year going to as many shows and educational classes as possible. Second, I would be in a high-end salon within one year of graduating. Finally, by the five year mark I would be on track to begin the process of building my own salon. I have completed my first two goals and am well on my way to realizing the third.
I set my goals high because I believe in challenging and stretching myself. If I reach for the stars and only get halfway that is a huge accomplishment, but if I only set my sights on what I know I can reach than I will miss out on so much! Ultimately, it is God’s will that matters, not mine. I will take my career wherever He leads and I will always serve Him with my talent. I do my best to follow God’s leading, I work hard to accomplish my goals, and I praise Him whether or not I succeed.
